THE
JAZZ PROPHETS
To a great degree, still shrouded in mystery, THE JAZZ PROPHETS
emerged on the New York City scene in 1989 - without pomp or
circumstance, without significant promotion or media attention.
Focused on pushing the envelope of what has come to be accepted as
"jazz", this, now legendary, power-trio documented their musical
evolution in live studio performances (at Manhattan's 29th Street Studio
& Brooklyn's Purple Light Studio) and in select public performances
between 1989-1999 (including small venue's like the Upper-East
Side's club Avalon and the now legendary Lower-Eastside venue,
C.B.G.B.) before returning to the studio to cultivate their unique style.
The merging of three unique musicians with disparate roots, guitarist
Eric Warren, drummer/percussionist Barry Cohen and self-styled
"sound architect" (keyboardist) "Stephen Cage" into a single unit
produced a distinct sound through their unique approach and and
diverse roots which continues to this day to stretch the boundries of
both free jazz and "electronica".
The Jazz Prophets can still be seen on Manhattan Neighborhood
Networks (in New York City) and on Win-TV (in Windsor, CT) where
their video "Live at Avalon" is still scheduled from time to time. Their
soundtrack and dedication to the films of Harry Smith ("Next Wave: The
Films of Harry Smith"), ran into legal issues with the estate of the late
cinematographer, but can still be caught on rare occassion on the
aforementioned networks (where it has become an underground
classic).
As this site evolves, it will attept to profile, via recordings and video
footage, this pioneering and much-imitated group, whose music is in
the final analysis, ultimately, beyond labels. Their in influences can be
discerned in an ever-growing number of musicians persuing an even
wider variety of musical formats, from Bill Laswell-produced projects
like Material to Iceland's own, now legendary, "MUM".
